Temple Square
The night of Greg's birthday we went up to Salt Lake and had a family dinner with my brother. Then we decided to head to Temple Square and take a look at the lights. We took Andrew to see the lights when he was a baby, but hadn't yet with all the kids. We weren't planning on doing this, so no one was dressed particularly warm. It was chilly, but still very beautiful. There is always a very special feeling at Temple Square. I always wander around with a lump in my throat. We stopped at the Tabernacle and went in to warm up and show the kids the organ pipes. I was flooded with memories of going to General Conference there when I was much younger. My Dad usually got tickets since he was the Bishop and then Stake President back in those days and we often would go just the two of us to Conference while everyone else stayed at Grandma's house in SLC. It was a very special memory I have with my Dad. I remember once we went for the April conference and I was probably 9 or 10. We were almost the last ones admitted in with tickets before they started letting standby people in to fill the balcony. So we had seats way at the back. It had been snowing and I was freezing cold with snow in my hair. A nice lady usher looked at me and smiled and then took my Dad and me out of our back row seats all the way up to the front and found seats for us on the front row, just under the pulpit. I'm not sure why. She just decided to give us a special little treat and promote our seats to best in the house. I remember trying VERY hard to pay attention to conference and not let my mind wander for that session because I felt like I owed it to that nice lady. This red tree was the most impressive one, I think. So beautiful.
Paul took a video under the red tree.

Happy Birthday Greg!
Today is Greg's birthday. He is 31. I'm still in my twentys so I'm not "old" like him. The boys and I are going to go take him and the pharmacy staff Krispy Kreme donuts at work then we'll have a family party tonight. Doesn't that sound fun?
I've kept my present a super surprise from him and the kids. Kids mostly because they can't keep their sweet little traps shut and we've already spilled the beans on a few Christmas presents. So we don't tell them things anymore.
Anyway, happy birthday, Greg!

Latest Happenings
I skipped over posting a Thanksgiving recap, unintentionally, so I'll do it now. I hosted this year and we had a full house. It was so fun to have all of Greg's family here with us. The turkey turned out pretty good, which was my biggest worry. And almost everything else was brought by various people. I made some pumpkin pies, my favorite. Andrew helped me make some cute place settings which has become a yearly tradition for the two of us. He wants to make the same ones every year. I borrowed the idea from a friend, and they're so cute. You take a paper plate, preferrably the strong chinette ones. Paint the bottom inside part an orangish pumpkin color, then paint the sides of the raised plate brown for the crust. Cut it into pie pieces then glue on a cotton ball for some whipped cream. Write names on the crust or on the piece of pie. I use my tole painting paint. Very cute and simple.
We had my parents here this last weekend for a neat family event. My mom's cousin is married to Gary Smith, who is a direct male descendant of Hyrum Smith. And through that family from the time that Joseph and Hyrum were martyred in Carthage, they've passed down some family relics from father to son through the Smith family. They include Hyrum's clothes that he died in. They have bullet holes all over them and blood stains on his shirt. His pocket watch that was smashed by a bullet. Hyrum's rifle and sword from when he served in the Nauvoo Legion. His customized sunglasses that he wore. These are so cool. They look so modern and flashy. His mother's (Luck Mack) little tiny footstool that she always used. And a wooden box with a lock on the front that Joseph kept the gold plates in for a while. It originally belonged to his brother Alvin. The box has his (Alvin's) name scratched into the front of it, and if you look very closely you can see the individual letters still there. They have not been tampered with all these years. The Smith family has held all these items in their possession from the time of Hyrum's death. Gary's father, Eldred, is the Ameritus Church Patriarch and for the last 50 years he has gone all over the world with these articles giving firesides. He is now 103 and decided it was time to pass them on to his son, Gary. Now Gary and his wife (my cousin Elizabeth) are doing the firesides and they gave a special one for just family members last Saturday night. It was so neat to see all those things. People have asked them why they haven't donated them to the church museum in Salt Lake where all the other things that belonged to Joseph and the Smith family are. They explained that they felt if these things were in a museum, people might walk past them and glance at them, but wouldn't get the full history and story behind each and every piece. It was such a special night and I felt overwhelmed as I looked at and touched the articles that belonged to Hyrum. They estimated that these items have been seen by almost a million people in the course of Eldred's dedication in doing the presentations. The items are handled with extreme care. No flash photography and only handling with gloves on.
We got dumped on big time with a load of snow over the weekend. I love it. I was not meant to stay in California when we lived there. I just couldn't give up the beautiful snow and white mountains that surround me today.
David decided to climb into the tub fully clothed Sunday morning while it was filling up.

My Public Has Spoken
Would you like to look like this? Because for a limited time only Glamour Shots by Deb are 75% off. No thanks, I already get my hair cut at the Cuttin' Coral. I'll give a dollar to the first person who can name it.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
The other day Greg and I were watching Sense and Sensibility. Yes, I can occasionally get Greg to watch Jane Austen with me. Anyway, there's this scene where Mr. Willoughby cuts off a lock of Marianne's hair and kisses it and then folds it up in a handkerchief. Apparently back in those times that was a BIG deal. Like they were now engaged or something, because it was such an intimate gesture. So in a teasing manner, I turned to Greg and asked him why he had never asked me for a lock of hair. He replied: "Because I can always go scoop some up off the bathroom floor, or pull some out of the shower drain." Such a romantic, that guy. I have long hair. Yes, it falls out and clogs up drains. Yes, it gets in my face and bothers me. And yes, it ends up in a sloppy ponytail most days to get it out of the way. Today I went to the salon and had them cut off more than a foot!! WHOA!! Now I have a very short bob and am absolutely shocked at my impulse decision.

Autumn Fun
Since November has been so strange here lately with unusually warm weather, we decided to make the most of it. We drove up Squaw Peak to the look out. Off to the side of the parking lot we noticed a nice little trail, so we hopped the stone wall and followed it for a little while. We didn't get too far, the sun was going down and getting a bit chilly. But I'm thinking it might actually lead all the way to the peak that overlooks Provo. We had a nice family outing and my brother Paul shot the candid photos with his phone.
I made cookies last night and let David have a wonderful time. Probably wouldn't be so bad if they weren't warm from the oven and gooey.
David got into the laundry I was folding and tried his hardest to put on a pair of Nathan's underwear. So I helped him and then took some photos that I hope to embarass him with in years to come.
Raking up all the leaves in the back yard and then making a wonderful pile to jump into. David didn't care for it at all and didn't appreciate being tossed in by his mother.
Family photos up Squaw Peak.
Paul photoshopped a Halloween Picture and made it much more accurate.

Trick or Treating and Goodbyes
We survived Halloween. Nathan was sick and coughed the whole time we were out and I probably made it worse by letting him go. But who can deny their kid trick or treating? We went up and down our street and then the street behind us and called it good. The boys having been planning their costumes for months it seems like and we finally settled on Star Wars. We found great, inexpensive costumes at Target and they were thrilled. I especially love Yoda.
We've had a very sad thing happen in our neighborhood. My kids' best friends just moved away yesterday. This has been EXTREMELY difficult for Andrew, especially. When we moved here about a year and few months ago, these neighbor boys became our instant best friends. They lived directly across the street and it was the most convenient, perfect situation we could have asked for. Andrew has cried almost every night for the few weeks leading up to their move. He's a very tenderhearted guy and it's not difficult to start the water works with him. But it's been breaking my heart as a parent to see him so sad. The silver lining in all this is that the family moved to the same town that Greg's parents live in. So when we go visit them, we'll be able to drop in on our friends. That's been the only positive thing we can take away from this. They were awesome neighbors, good friends, and they will be sorely missed!

Whirlwind Trip!
We had a super quick trip to California this past weekend. Greg's Grandpa John had his 80th birthday party so we made the trip out to celebrate with him. We caught a late flight out of SLC Friday night and flew to Burbank where we checked into a hotel right by the airport. We were so exhausted. It was a tough flight with David who won't sleep anywhere but a crib. Forget trying to get him to snuggle and relax and sleep on a plane at 11:30pm. We had reserved the cheapest economy room we could at the Marriott and actually found a great deal on the room, which we had booked a couple months ago. When we got there to check in, they had given our room away to someone else. So, they gave us a free upgrade to a luxury suite and we didn't mind a bit.
Grandpa's party was the next day on Saturday and it was so great. Yummy food, lots of games and socializing. It was more like a family reunion with 40-50 people there. The kids got to ride a horse! We went back to our hotel that night and got up early Sunday morning to fly home. While in the Salt Lake airport, we took a great video of David on the escalator. He is so precious!

Oh What a Night!
No, this isn't a post about that somewhat inappropriate song from the 60s (which I happen to love) it's about the Wildings' night last night.
Around 4:30 the entire household woke up to the most piercing, screaming, horrible noise imaginable. The smoke detector in Andrew and Nathan's bedroom had gone off. I have never in my life heard a noise like that. I can't even begin to describe the boys' reaction to being woken up by such a noise. Complete pandamonium. Greg climbed up on a chair and yanked the thing down to get it to stop. He took out the battery and we tried to calm everyone down. Andrew has a horror of fires for some reason. We've never had a fire and never had a problem before. When he was in kindergarten the kids had a fire drill and he panicked so much his teacher had to call me in to calm him down. I have no idea where he got this paralyzing fear of fires. Anyway, we think it was just a weird battery thing. Maybe the battery needed to be changed and it yells at you when it's ready. We all got back to bed for a little while and then BAM the same thing happened with a different smoke detector out in the hall. Everyone up, crying, hysterics, etc. We're positive there was no smoke in the house. We don't know what would set them off, unless it was just time to change batteries. I couldn't fall asleep after that, so I've been up for quite awhile this morning. I hope I can take a nap this afternoon. We're flying to California tonight on a VERY late flight and this could be a really long night.

Sick, Sick, Sick
Without fail I get sick every year just as the season turns to Autumn. And it seems to stay with me for weeks. Just a yuck cold that never goes away. Very annoying.
David my 16 month old has this completely bizarre rash over his entire body. It started out as a few red spots, then grew to huge patches, then finally covering most of his body. I took him to the instacare clinic because it was a weekend and his pediatrician was closed. The doc there told me it was probably some virus and he couldn't do anything for me. So today I'm taking him to his pediatrician and see what he says. It doesn't seem to both him much. He doesn't scratch at it. He's not acting grumpy or sick. He's just his normal happy self but with an ugly red rash covering him head to toe. No fever, either. Very strange.

Up, up, up, and more up
Yesterday we went for a family hike up to the Timpanogos Caves. I had been long ago as a kid and remembered it being really cool. So we took our boys and the ever helpful Uncle Paul and up we went. It took about an hour to get up to the cave on foot, then maybe a half an hour guided tour through. Very beautiful up there. The boys did great. The trail gets awfully steep in some parts, but the whole thing was paved and you can rest all along the way. After the hike we went to the first BYU home game at LaVell Edwards Stadium and watched them lose spectacularly to Florida State. It was painful. We usually park pretty far away from the stadium so we don't get stuck in the horrible traffic crunch getting away, but we have to hoof it for a long distance to and from the game and after our hike that morning, I was pretty beat. But it was still a fun day.
